Why choose a Pellet Boiler?

Why choose a pellet boiler?

Still little known to the general public, pellet boilers are very interesting products for heating individual homes, even if poorly insulated.
This type of boiler is a reliable and economical long-term ecological alternative.

Energy prices as of 1 January 2020:

Pellet boilers have many advantages:
  • A way of heating adaptable to most individual homes
  • An attractive cost of use thanks to the competitive price of pellets
  • Greatly reduced annual heating bills
  • Very accessible small powers
  • Models automate maintenance and fuel replenishment and can be multi-purpose (central heating and domestic hot water)
  • An environmentally friendly fuel that respects the environment.

How does a pellet boiler work?

Operating similar to classic oil or gas boilers, these boilers produce heat by burning pellets.

The boiler is fed automatically with pellets, thanks to a worm screw or a suction system, to reach the combustion chamber. The pellet tank must be refilled on average once a month and once a year depending on the model chosen.

The heat generated is then transferred by the water, which passes through the radiators (or underfloor heating) and up to the hot water tank, to heat the domestic water if necessary.

What are the criteria to consider?

Needs:

A needs assessment is the first step. Here is a non-exhaustive list of questions to ask yourself:

  • What is the desired temperature?
  • Central heating and/or domestic hot water?
  • How many square meters do we need to heat?
  • In which geographical area is the accommodation located?
  • Good insulation?
  • How many people live in the accommodation?

Power :

The heating power required for the home is calculated on the basis of its energy losses in the home . The latter depend on a number of factors (desired temperature, heating volume, insulation level, geographical location, ...). Do not hesitate to contact our experts on 0823 988239

Technologies:

Depending on the model of the boiler, several options will be available:

  • A more ergonomic LCD screen or touch screen,
  • Different types of programming of the operating time slots,
  • A Wifi module for remote control of the boiler.

Free space:

A pellet boiler requires a certain installation volume and safety distances depending on the model. It is also necessary to provide a storage space for the pellets. At FRAIM we offer two alternatives:

  • A tank integrated directly into the boiler and to be refilled manually on average every two weeks.
  • Textile silo capable of collecting a quantity of pellets between 1.2 and 7 tons. This solution allows greater peace of mind in handling.

Air flow and flue:

The installation of a pellet boiler requires the provision of an air intake in the room and the evacuation of the fumes through another duct.

What type of pellet boiler to choose?

There are two types of pellet boilers whose choice will be made according to needs:

  • Compact boilers offer excellent value for money but require more maintenance in regards to ignition, maintenance and pellet supply.
  • Automatic boilers have an almost autonomous operation of its ignition and cleaning.

How can I maintain the boiler?

Boiler maintenance is essential to optimize performance, safety and life.

Maintenance of compact boilers requires the following actions:

Every 2 - 3 days:

  • Ash collection compartment
  • Ash drawer
  • Flame cutter

Every 60 - 90 days:

  • Smoke fan exchanger compartment
  • Door/ash pan seal
  • Escape is "T"

Every year (exceptional maintenance):

  • Complete heat exchanger
  • Smoke duct
  • Internal parts
  • Fireplace
  • Circulation pump
  • Exchanger
  • Hydraulic and electromechanical components.

Automatic boilers are easy to maintain , in particular thanks to mobile segment burners which automate their cleaning.

In both cases:

An in-depth "exceptional maintenance" of the boiler must be carried out every year by a professional .
